Basic Steps for Good Peer Review

The Florida Bar has a certification program for lawyers that’s been around for over 25 years. There are 24 areas of law in which lawyers can get certified, and there are currently over 4,000 certified lawyers. To become certified, lawyers need to have at least 5 years of legal experience, pass an exam, and get good reviews from their peers. Unfortunately, some lawyers don’t get good reviews because their colleagues don’t have good things to say about how they practice law. This often happens with younger lawyers who may have picked up bad habits from their mentors. To get good peer reviews, it’s important to be ethical, professional, and not engage in dishonest or unethical behavior. 1. Respond promptly to other lawyers, whether it’s a call, email, or a request for a review.
2. Be a problem solver and look for common ground to resolve disputes.
3. Be honest and upfront in all your dealings with the court and other lawyers. No lying or hiding evidence.
4. If you can’t respond quickly, have someone let the other person know and promise to respond as soon as you can. Be honest and forthright with others, even when it’s tough. Treat people with respect and dignity, even if you don’t like them. It’s easier to work things out with people when you’re on good terms. If you follow these guidelines, you’ll be known as a fair opponent.
