“Becoming a Building Contractor in Florida”

– Florida requires individuals to complete the Florida contractors’ examination to become certified contractors.
– The examination consists of different parts depending on the type of license sought.
– Applicants must have the required ability, knowledge, skill, and experience in various construction areas such as foundation/slabs, masonry walls, and steel erection. – Applicants for the Building Contractor license must have no more than 3-story commercial construction experience fit for human occupancy.
– They can also show experience in large-scale residential construction or renovation work, but commercial experience is required for the license.
– Applicants have 3 options to qualify for licensure: education in engineering, architecture, or building construction, 4 years of active experience as a worker or foreman, or a combination of education and experience.
– Applicants must meet financial responsibility requirements and provide a consumer credit report with a FICO credit score of at least 660 or furnish a licensing bond. – Applicants for a certified building contractor license in Florida may have to reduce the required bond amount by completing a 14-hour financial responsibility course approved by the Board.
– Applicants must establish good moral character and submit fingerprints for a criminal background check.
– Criminal history reports are obtained through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and are valid for six months.
– Applicants must have workers’ compensation, public liability, and property damage insurance, and maintain this insurance while their license is active.
