How can a dependent visa holder apply for an extension?

Dependent visa holders can utilize form I-539 to apply for an extension. However, the dependent visa holders’ status is contingent upon the primary visa holder’s status. Therefore, they can only extend their visa until the expiration date of the primary visa holder’s visa. If the primary visa holder is no longer in status, the dependent visa also becomes invalid.
