A U.S. citizen who is at least 20 years old can file a petition for their parent, and in certain situations, their stepparent, to reside in the United States. For a stepparent, the marriage between their parent and their stepparent must have occurred before the U.S. citizen reached 18 years of age. To make an application, a separate petition needs to be submitted for each parent or stepparent. Afterward, they would either undergo processing abroad in their country or go through a process called adjustment of status within the United States if they are already present.
