– Florida has recently increased the minimum age for marriage to 17, with written parental consent required.
– The previous law allowed children as young as 16 to marry with parental consent, and there was no minimum age requirement in the event of pregnancy.
– The new law was inspired by a woman who was forced to marry at 11 after being raped and impregnated.
– Within the last 5 years, 1,828 marriage licenses were issued in Florida to at least one minor, including 132 licenses to couples where both parties were minors.
– The new law came into effect on July 1, 2018.
