What is a patent attorney?

A patent attorney is a legal professional who is licensed in at least one state and specializes in patent law. In addition to being an attorney, a patent attorney must also hold a technical degree and pass an additional bar examination. They are authorized by the US Patent Office to practice patent law, which requires holding both a federal patent license and a state bar membership.
