Nursing home abuse is when residents of long-term care facilities suffer physical, emotional, or psychological harm due to their caregivers’ negligent or intentional acts. Long-term care facilities can be held liable for nursing home abuse for inadequate care, negligence in screening employees, inadequate supervision, or improper facilities maintenance.
A resident in a facility that participates in the federal Medicare program has the legal right to be free from physical abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, mental abuse, and medical restraints for punishment or convenience.
