Why should I hire an attorney when one will be provided to me?

Typically, the most important reason is time. Once you’ve been assigned a court-appointed lawyer, your criminal prosecution has already started. Typically it happens at arraignment. That’s when the court is going to inform you of what charges you’re actually facing.
Second, time dedicated to your case. While court-appointed lawyers pass the same bar exam and meet the same criteria and most of them are excellent attorneys, they’re inundated with cases and can’t always dedicate the time that your case might need.
If at all possible and if you have the financial means, it’s in your best interest to hire a private attorney.
